A granite barn set in the remote hills of Marco de Canaveses becomes a calm studio-home where indoor work blends into the rough outdoor landscape. The project respects the solid, existing stone while preparing room for a new wooden structure that will shape a quieter, more grounded way of living.

Exterior

The remote location shapes every decision. Access is limited, so the new elements must arrive lightly and with purpose. A modern interior emerges inside the original envelope, bringing warmth without softening the strength of the shell. The granite remains largely untouched from the outside; the transformation happens through careful insertions rather than bold gestures.

Wood becomes the counterpoint to the stone. It introduces tactility and lightness, guiding how the interior unfolds toward the terrace and the surrounding land.

More info

We work with what is already present. The granite walls stand firm, carrying the story of a rural building shaped by time. Our task is to prepare a gentle transformation: keeping the weight and honesty of the stone while opening the structure toward new rhythms of living. The small barn grows into a workspace and home, supported by a large terrace that looks out across the rugged terrain.

All connections between stone and timber are drawn with care. Each joint expresses how the old structure meets the future one. This dialogue helps the building settle into the landscape with clarity and calm.

Observation

Inside the granite frame
"Granite holds the memory of the hill, while the new spaces open gently toward the quiet countryside."
